Over the last 15 years, I honestly cannot count the number of dogs that have been in our home that have suffered from some level of dementia (cognitive dysfunction). It is a horrible disease that takes the mind of our beloved pets before we are ready for them to leave us. I have written before on this disease, so today’s topic of conversation is: can we prevent it from happening to start with? I researched this several years ago in hopes that I could keep our personal dog, Pete, from developing it since we have had him since he was one. I don’t usually have this chance, so I wanted to do all I can to keep him happy and healthy long into the future!
While there isn’t anything that can prevent the development of cognitive dysfunction, there are some things that can reduce and slow the symptoms. So what can we do? Start with diet – feeding a good quality (complete and balanced) food with medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). Additional supplements can be added if the food you choose doesn’t include the recommended items.
It’s not all about the food, though. Keeping a dog’s mind stimulated also plays a role in slowing the development of dementia. Regular physical activity is the single biggest factor shown to reduce the symptoms of cognitive dysfunction. Brain games and toys, along with keeping the dog’s nose working, are key. Training, socialization with other dogs and people, and walks in new environments can also play a key role in keeping your dog mentally stimulated. Keeping a consistent routine with feeding and sleep is also important. People do better with routine, and so do dogs.
Hopefully, keeping in mind all of the aspects of a dog’s development and well-being will help your pet stay healthy and happy well into their golden years!
